Course Structure

Blackrock Further Education Institute provides education and training for the following exam bodies:- the International Therapy Examining Council (ITEC) and the Comite Internationale D'esthetique et de Cosmetologie (CIDESCO) qualifications, which are the world's foremost international qualifications. This course caters for school leavers, graduates and mature students. It is intensive and requires a high level of ability, enthusiasm and commitment.

  • Year 1:
  • Students are prepared for the following ITEC qualifications:
  • Beauty Specialist - Skin and Eye Treatments, Make-Up, Manicure, Waxing
  • Facial Electrics
  • Anatomy, Physiology and Body Massage
  • Electrolysis
  • Course content includes:
  • Anatomy and physiology of the head, face, neck and body
  • Skin, skin types, skin care, skin diseases and disorders
  • Nails, manicure and pedicure, nail diseases and disorders
  • Cosmetic science, hygiene, first aid, make-up, eyelash and eyebrow treatments
  • Facial massage, depilation, bleaching, face masks, electrical treatments, heat and light treatments
  • Body massage, cellulite, exercise and figure correction, figure configuration
  • Electricity elements, face and body electrical treatments
  • Electrical epilation – permanent hair removal
  • Year 2:
  • IPL/Laser
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Body Treatments/Body Electrics
  • Eyebrow Treatments and Eyelash Enhancements
  • CIDESCO Facial and Body Therapy including SPA Treatments
  • Comite Internationale D'esthetique et de Cosmetologie (CIDESCO) is based in Zurich and the qualification is recognised throughout the world.

Assessment and certification
  • This course is certified by the International Therapy Examination Council (ITEC).
  • Facial and Body Therapy including SPA Treatments is certified by Comite International D'esthétique et de Cosmetologie CIDESCO.
  • Examinations take place in April and May.
  • Evidence of Treatments (case studies) is required for ITEC modules.
  • A thesis is required for CIDESCO certification.
  • These awarding bodies apply a rigid set of standards governing attendance, learning and examinations.
  • Graduates who achieve ITEC qualifications can become overseas members of ITEC.
  • Information Technology (Memento Salon Software) is certified by Phorest.


Education/ Training

Graduates who complete this course may apply to the following course in BFEI:

On successful completion of the first year course, students are encouraged to progress further by studying for the Advanced Beauty Therapy Diploma in year two.

Entry Requirements

Year 1
  • Leaving Certificate/LCA

Applicants should have achieved five passes OR five O6/H7s OR a combination of five O6/H7s OR have achieved the LCA with a Merit profile.

  • Others including Mature Students

If you are a mature student (aged 21 or over) and do not hold the Leaving Certificate, then you are welcome to apply. Each application will be assessed individually.

Advisory Meeting

There is high demand for places and early application is advised.  Applications will be processed strictly in order of receipt. Applicants will have an advisory meeting to offer guidance and to ensure course suitability. Places will be offered, on a first come basis, following the outcome of the personal Advisory Meeting, subject to the applicant meeting the entry requirements of the course. Applicants will also be advised on course costs, uniform, product kits and registration details.

Year 2
  • Prior Qualifications

Applicants should hold relevant Facial, Electrical and Body qualifications.

  • Other Requirements

Applicants may be required to undergo a suitability interview. Applicants must have reached the required standard in the ITEC examinations (year 1) and satisfy the Institute’s criteria on suitability. Short listing will apply, based on general ability, specific aptitude and demonstrable interests.


  • At course commencement, students are required to pay for books, exams, €200 PLC Government Levy (unless exempt), a Student Services Fee and where applicable professional body registration fees.  There are no tuition fees for EU students.
  • Students will be required to purchase certain items including a uniform and product kits.
