Web Design and Digital Media – Year 1 Mornings Course


Do you enjoy working with computers and have an aptitude for creativity and design? Can you see yourself working with digital technologies? Are you interested in designing and coding for the web and mobile devices? Our Web and Digital Media courses at BFEI will respond to your needs by providing you with a strong foundation for entry into the online digital media sector.  We take a hands-on approach to teaching and learning with all course material and assessment modelled on industry practices.

Career Opportunities

Job opportunities exist in specialist digital media and web design companies. There is also a range of exciting opportunities available in areas such as advertising, publishing, telecommunications, education and training.

Course Structure

The Certificate in Creative Media course is structured so that the student will develop expertise in two related areas: Digital Media and Web Design. This course will equip participants with the skills to:

  • Plan, design, and build websites based on the fundamental principles of usability, accessibility and search engine optimisation
  • Design and manipulate photographs and vector graphics for web and print
  • Apply the principles of graphic design to all projects
  • Plan and create online banner advertising campaigns for websites using Animate
  • Understand the principles of advertising, digital marketing and working in teams.

Assessment and certification
  • This course is certified by QQI.
  • Learners who successfully complete the course will be awarded the QQI Level 5 Certificate in Creative Media (5M5048).
  • Assessment is based on a combination of assignments and exams.


Education/ Training

Graduates who complete this course may apply to the following course in BFEI:

Students who successfully complete the Certificate course can progress to the Advanced Certificate in Web Design and Digital Media in BFEI.

Graduates can apply through the CAO system for entry into courses in the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme such as:

After Year 2, you can apply through the CAO system to gain entry into Year 2 of the degree courses at the IADT, Dun Laoghaire and the ITB.

Entry Requirements

Year 1

  • Leaving Certificate

Applicants should have achieved five passes OR five O6/H7s  OR a combination of five O6/H7s OR have achieved the LCA with a Merit profile.

  • Mature Students 

If you are a mature student (aged 21 or over) and do not hold the Leaving Certificate, then you are welcome to apply. Each application will be assessed individually.

  • Other Requirements

Applicants should have an aptitude for creativity and design, a keen interest in the various media formats and basic computing skills.  While a portfolio is not compulsory, applicants are advised to bring a portfolio to their advisory meeting.

For the morning's option, preference will be given to graduates from other disciplines who want to change career path and up-skill in the latest technologies.

Advisory Meeting

Applicants will have an advisory meeting to offer guidance and to ensure course suitability. Applicants will also be advised on course costs and registration details.


At course commencement, students are required to pay for books, €200 PLC Government Levy (unless exempt), a Student Services charge and examination fees. There are no tuition fees for EU students.
