Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)



This is an evening course.

The course will run on Mondays from 6-9pm commencing late September over 25 academic weeks. 

Course cost: €500 tuition fees (payable to BFEI) plus €175 examination fees (payable to Cisco). Total cost is €675.

Are you interested in acquiring hands-on IT networking skills? Technology has advanced very quickly but the numbers of skilled professionals has not kept up with these advances, giving rise to a strong demand for IT networking professionals. The CCNA qualification is focused on providing the skills employers need right now.

The CCNA certification validates the ability to install, configure, operate, and troubleshoot medium-size computer networks. 

Students on this course will be prepared for the the Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices, Part 1 (ICND1) and Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 2 (ICND2) exams. Students who successfully achieve the ICND1 and ICND2 exams are awarded the CCNA certification from Cisco. 

As an accredited Cisco Networking Academy BFEI's Cisco lab is equipped with the latest Cisco equipment, Cisco simulation tools and uses Cisco’s on-line curriculum. 

Applications are welcome from those who have:

  • a level 5 FETAC/QQI award in an IT area, or
  • an IT qualification in a related area (for example A+, Network+, or a Microsoft certification), or
  • a degree or equivalent in a non-IT subject area, or
  • work experience in an IT area.

Course Structure

The aim of the programme is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to design, build and maintain small to medium sized networks. Those who successfully complete the programme are trained to a level where they can gain the CCNA qualification.

Students on the course will be prepared for the ICND1  and ICND2 exams.
Students who pass this exam achieve the CCNA certification.
The main areas of focus on the course are:

* Introduction to Local Area Networking: core LAN concepts
* Configure basic routing and advanced routing
* Configure basic switching
* Network Infrastructure

* Operate a medium-sized LAN with multiple switches, supporting VLANs, trunking, and spanning tree
* Troubleshoot IP connectivity
* Describe how to configure and troubleshoot Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) in an IPv4 environment, and configure EIGRP for IPv6
* Configure and troubleshoot Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) in an IPv4 environment and configure OSPF for IPv6
* Define the characteristics, functions, and components of a WAN
* Describe how device management can be implemented

Learning Environment

BFEI is equiped with a full lab of Cisco equipment, which gives students the opportunity to get hands-on practice with Cisco equipment, which is crucial for exam success. 

BFEI is a recognised Cisco Network Academy. This status gives BFEI students access to Cisco's online learning resources via the Cisco network academy website ( Resources include Cisco online curriculum, Cisco practice exams and the Cisco network simulation tool, Packet Tracer. 

In addition BFEI also provides students with access to Skillsoft ( Cisco learning resources. Skillsoft is recognised as one of the leading providers of elearning material in the world.

BFEI will hold an open days on 29 August 2018 from 12pm until 6pm, all are welcome to visit the college, view the Cisco lab and discuss the course with our Cisco instructor.

Entry Requirements

  • Prior Qualifications

Applicants should have successfully completed a level 5 QQI award. Applications are also welcome from those who have a high level of academic achievement in non-IT sucject areas or have relevant achievement in non-IT subject areas or have experience in the computing industry.


  • Other Applicants

The course is also suitable for those with a Certificate, Diploma, Degree in a computing area who wish to enhance their employability.  It is also suitable for those with experience in the computing industry who wish to update and advance their skills and acquire certified qualifications.



Instructor Profile

The Cisco course in BFEI is delivered by Frank Griffin. Frank has been teaching Cisco courses for many years, including CCNA and CCNA Security. Frank also has many years of hands on experience managing computer network systems. Frank’s qualifications include:

  • Cisco Certified Academy Instructor for CCNA and CCNA Security.
  • Cisco Expert Level Instructor. Recognised in May 2016 as an Expert Instructor under Cisco's Instructor Excellence Award program. The Expert level recognition, recognises high performing instructors globally in the following areas:

  • MSc in Internet Systems from Dublin City University.
