ABC of Autism Certificate

Introduction

Autism Spectrum is an umbrella term used to describe individuals who have very specific differences and challenges in communication, social skills, interactions with others and who engage in restrictive or repetitive activities.  Understanding the nature of autism and the implications for communication, behaviour, learning, socialising and the ability to process information is critical for everyone who interacts with, who supports or lives with those on the autism spectrum.

The course is an introductory course that aims to enable participants to create a framework of understanding and knowledge that will enhance the lives of the individuals on the autism spectrum whom they live with, support or engage with in schools, colleges, workplaces and in the community.     The course aims to equip parents, teachers and other practitioners with evidence-based strategies to meet the needs of children and young people on the autism spectrum.

Participants will gain a clear understanding of the developmental and sensory differences that may impact on home life, school life, academic, play, social and self-help skills at different stages of life, including the transition to further education and employment.

The course is designed: to give a fundamental understanding of what autism is, how it is assessed, an outline of the core features and difference and the implications for learning and understanding.

The course designers and tutor have more than 20 years of experience in the field of autism they live with and/or support and work with individuals on the autism spectrum.

The course provides an insight into how sensory regulation differs for individuals on the spectrum and explores strengths and weakness of being autistic in relation to the core areas of autism.
