Film Studies: Explore the World of Film Analysis
Are you interested in talking about films, thinking about films, analysing films?
This is the course for you. Whether you're a seasoned film lover or just beginning to explore the world of cinema, this course will provide you with critical tools to analyse and appreciate films!
This evening course will run for 10 weeks and cover topics such as genre, narrative and French cinema. It will involve lively discussion with presentations and film clips.
Peter Larkin is an independent film critic and tutor, he has written on Acting, British Cinema and the director as auteur.
What You’ll Learn
Analyse films through camerawork, editing, and performance. Understand cinema’s socio-political, artistic, and commercial impacts. Develop critical tools to appreciate film as a cultural and imaginative medium.

Week 1: Introduction to Film Style and Techniques
Week 2: Genre – Exploring the western, sci-fi, horror, thriller, comedy.
Week 3: Narrative – how films are structured and how changes are made
Week 4: Authorship and the Auteur Theory
Week 5: Director Study: John Huston – an overview of the work
Week 6: Ealing Studios – a look at Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Ladykillers etc.
Week 7: East Asian Cinema
Week 8: French Cinema
Week 9: Realism in Cinema: Ken Loach, The Dardenne Brothers etc.
Week 10: Director Study: Joseph Losey – an overview of the work
