This 8-week course offers an enjoyable and interactive space for participants to explore literature in a relaxed, welcoming setting, with a maximum of 14 participants. We will have informal, guided discussions about the book around a series of topics chosen to highlight key elements of storytelling, facilitated by a creative writing teacher. The group will go beyond traditional book discussions by including optional, supportive activities for participants who are interested in developing their own creative responses to the topics explored.

Course Structure: Book time – A Creative Reading Circle
Duration: 8 Weeks Session Length: 2 Hours per week Facilitator: Creative Writing Teacher
Each session will focus on a section of the chosen book. We will both listen to, and read, the extract of the evening, followed by guided discussions, creative exercises, and optional writing prompts. Participants will be invited to read ahead during the following week, in preparation for the next section.
Week-by-Week Breakdown:
Week 1: Welcome & Introduction to the Book Club
- Icebreaker activities to introduce members.
- Discussion: What makes a book engaging?
- Overview of the book chosen and structure of the course.
- Tips and tricks to support your reading and engagement.
- Optional creative writing prompt: Write a personal reflection on either: why you love reading or what sparked your new interest in reading.
Week 2: First Impressions & Character Analysis
- Discussion: First reactions to the book.
- Explore character development – what makes characters compelling?
- Writing prompt: Describe a scene from the viewpoint of a minor character.
Week 3: Setting and the World of the Book
- When and where does the action of the book take place?
- Discussion: how does the author create the mood and atmosphere of the book?
- Creative challenge: Make rough notes on a world where your own story might be set: where, when, history, local colour, any important details.
Week 4: Story Structure & Plot Development
- Delve into the book’s structure (the story arc of traditional storytelling).
- What makes a gripping plot? Useful storytelling techniques.
- Group discussion: What if? Predict possible alternative endings to the story.
- Writing challenge: Write a 300-word alternative ending to a scene.
Week 5: Themes & Messages
- Identify the key messages and themes of the book.
- Discuss how themes relate to participants' own experiences.
- Creative writing exercise: Choose one theme that comes up in the book and write a scene exploring the same theme, from personal observation or experience.
Week 6: Language & Style
- Take a close look at the author’s writing style.
- Discuss what makes particular sentences or passages particularly effective.
- Creative challenge: Write a paragraph mimicking the author’s style.
Week 7: Final Reflections & Deeper Insights
- Review the impact of the book as a whole: strengths, weaknesses, final impressions.
- Share personal takeaways from this reading journey.
- Recommend book exchange – participants suggest books to each other.
Week 8: Wrap-Up & Celebration
- Open discussion on how the Book Circle experience has impacted members.
- Optional: Creative showcase – participants share their creative responses from previous weeks.
- Participants are invited to bring a friend to share their experience of the Circle and take part in final celebrations.
- Final book-themed quiz or fun activity.
- Plans for future reading and potential ongoing meet-ups.
