CORE STRENGTH – Your Pilates routine will focus primarily on the Powerhouse muscles of your abdominals, glutes, lower back and pelvis. When you strengthen these muscles through Pilates practice, you will find that your daily activities will become easier and safer. Having strength in the middle body enables better movement of the upper and lower body both independently and when integrated.

BUILDING HIP AND SHOULDER MOBILITY AND STRENGTH – free movement of these joints through their full range of motion will build the strength and flexibility of the soft tissues supporting the joints. Pilates will teach you how to move these joints independently by engaging your abdominal muscles and stabilising through your core.

BALANCE – Pilates will take you through slow and controlled movements that focus on coordination and proprioception. You will learn to distribute your weight evenly and use your core strength to stabilise the body. Good balance is vital through all stages of life and during all levels of activity and keeps us safe from potential falls.

MIND-BODY CONNECTION – Pilates requires concentration and an awareness of how the mind controls each movement. By taking time in class to focus on posture and alignment, breathing and precise movements, participants can improve their focus and coordination. Improving the mind-body connection will promote a fuller understanding of how ones body works and responds to movement.

SPINE STRENGTH – Through spinal mobilisation and spinal stabilisation your spine will benefit from increased strength and improved flexibility. Both of these will protect your spine and reduce stiffness and discomfort. With both a stronger spine and core, your posture will become aligned and this in turn will contribute to your improved wellbeing.

BREATH WORK – Pilates uses a simple and effective breathing technique that ensures you will get the most out of each exercise and will make it easier to improve your performance with practice. This breathing technique is incorporated into each exercise and will become second nature.

Your teacher: Sheila Maher

I have practiced Pilates for more than two decades and qualified as a Pilates instructor in UCD. I am committed to spreading the word about the many benefits of regular practice which include a stronger and more flexible back, increased hip and shoulder mobility and strength, improved muscle tone throughout the entire body and better balance and posture.

If it sounds like you could benefit from any of the above, why not try out this beginners/intermediate class. Exercises will have several variations so that both beginners and those with some experience can reap the benefits of the routines. Nobody will be left behind and everyone will be challenged, just enough.

All you have to do is bring a mat and some water and prepare to invest 45 minutes in yourself. Your body will thank you.
